A few words about infrared radiation:
Infrared (IR) radiation is often also called thermal radiation, as our body perceives it in the form of heat. More precisely, depending on temperature, thermal radiation extends from infrared to ultraviolet (UV) light via visible light (VIS). Infrared radiation is not visible to the human eye and in the electromagnetic spectrum occupies the range between 780 nm and 1 mm (1 000 000 nm).
Infrared radiation is divided into the following three categories:
IR-A (780 nm – 1400 nm)
IR-B (1400 nm – 3000 nm)
IR-C (3000 nm – 1 mm)
How does infrared radiation work?
Infrared radiation penetrates organic tissue and can cause damage. The longer the wavelength, the shallower the penetration depth into tissues. As already mentioned, infrared radiation is divided into three categories.
IR-A is the radiation with the greatest depth of penetration and can affect the retina and adipose tissue.
IR-B does not affect the retina and only penetrates the blood vessels, barely touching the adipose tissue.
IR-C does not go beyond the surface layer of the skin and cornea.
The radiator panel heater produces radiant heat that warms objects rather than air. Therefore, it is recommended that the objects to be heated (including people), are within the surface directly radiated by the heater.
Damage to the skin?
Exposing the dermis to a source of very high intensity infrared radiation can cause burns. In fact, however, this is a decidedly remote eventuality, since the sensation of pain already occurs before the skin suffers harmful burns and allows it to move away from the heat source in time.
Damage to the eyes?
IR-C radiation does not penetrate the surface layer of the skin and cornea.
Well, that’s just a hint on the boundless technical doctrine of infrared, but here it is enough to make you realise how good our IR-C long-wave heaters are.
